Mrs. Russell's Room: Teacher Talk Tuesday: SAT-10 Chat

I had a great time last night sharing my expectations with the parents on our standardized testing and I thought it would be a good idea to share some of what I did with you! :)

We are taking the SAT 10's in reading and in math this year.

The test is not aligned to Common Core, and that's a bit of a bummer...but...we press on, right? :)

I wanted my parents to have material in their hands that would work for them for several different home based practice sessions.

I had a brief powerpoint slide show prepared to keep me on track with my agenda...nothing too spectacular...just bullet points.

I made some simple folders out of large manila paper that I get with my A+ money through our warehouse. You could make the folders out of construction paper if you wish!

Each child's folder had one of these letters in it to explain my expectations for the test and what I needed from the parents.

We really only have one data point in first grade for reading, and that is our FAIR Test, so I created a document to show the parents their child's' current scores and progress from the last assessment.

The red lines across the bar graphs indicate where the student should be by the end of the year. I color coded the chart with red, yellow, green, or blue to show where they were in relation to their end of the year goals.

I provided each parent with a sheet that showed areas that would be on the test that they could work on with their child at home.

The last step is to print off resources that meet the needs of your students and place them in the folders in anticipation of the 'big night'. Distribute the folders to the parents at the meeting.
