Burgess is sharing some of the secrets of his method in the next several chapters! :) We'll be discussing three different hooks that he uses in his classroom. Today's hooks are all about MOVEMENT!
THE KINESTHETIC HOOK
This is a fun hook to do and can work with littles or with older learners. Find a way to get your students DOING something that works with the lesson!
One suggestion that Burgess gives is to have students climb into a box and pretend to mail themselves off like Henry 'Box' Brown!
I do a unit on the Underground railroad every year! I will be adding that to my lesson this year! So fun! :)

THE PEOPLE PROP HOOK
This is a great hook too! :) Use your students to create a graph. How can you make them a 'prop' in the lesson. When I taught third grade, I used this concept every year during the first week. While they were writing, I'd write the numbers 1-5 on the board...spaced out about a foot from each other. Then I'd ask them the first question and tell them to line up under the number that was on the board that reflected their answer. They were basically building a graph with PEOPLE! It was fun to see how many kids had the same feelings about things!

I'd take my kids out there and we'd write poetry and stories out by the butterfly garden once a week! It was a lot of fun and something that the kids really loved doing! We would pull up weeds and research them on the internet. We had a 'weed log'! It was great!
