Teach Like a Pirate Chapter 3: Rapport & Fun in the Sun Linky

Welcome to the third chapter of the book study for 'Teach Like A Pirate' written by Dave Burgess.  If this is your first time visiting me, please don't feel like you're missing things! :)  This book is such a fun read, you'll catch us in no time at all! :)

Chapter 3: Rapport

Today, Burgess explains how to build rapport with students in a way that keeps them connected to the content that you're teaching in ways that help them to engage in learning from you.

1.) Find connections between your content & pop culture.

*In my clasroom, I love making these kinds of connections!  This year, I made up a song with my co-planning bestie, Daina, to the tune of Gangnam Style!  It is on long and short vowel sounds!  To date we've got almost 3,000 views! :)  How fun is that!?

2.) Spend informal time with your kiddos.

*One of my kids favorite rewards is lunch with me.  I have a kidney shaped table in the classroom that I use for centers.  We eat there together and talk about all kinds of things its TOTALLY fun! :)

Earlier this year, we had a terrible bout of flu and we ate lunch in the classroom together at the kidney table.
A parent brought us these orange juices!  Their faces are priceless!

3.) Encourage your students to feel like doing the outrageous because YOU model behavior that shows you are willing to be vulnerable and let your hair down! :)

Surprisingly, I had to sell my students on the idea of a pirate classroom theme.  My six year olds literally were like...WHAT?  Pirates?  By the end of the year, they were ALL ABOUT IT! :)

I got lots of things at Oriental Trading and went to town with it! :)

We had headbands and earrings and medallions and gold coins and tattoos!

He spends the rest of the chapter going through the unique approach he has to the first three days.  Absolutely engaging!  I so wish he'd been one of my teachers! :)  It was fun reading for sure! :)

So, this week our new curriculum maps came out.  I was able to go over to a dear friends house and do what we love...drink sangria and PLAN! :)
