Teaching Math: Number Sense Strategies for ADDITION

Hello everyone! :)

This week, I spent a lot of time reviewing number sense strategies.  I don't know what series your school uses, but we use Harcourt's GO MATH for Florida.  In first grade, there's a lot of emphasis on teaching strategies with base ten.  I've been working on these all year, and now I'm starting to see how the students are embracing these strategies and really achieving the aims for the common core standards.

The standard that I'm covering today is: 1.NBT.C.4: Add within 100, using concrete models or drawing and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.  Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones.
As we move toward PARCC assessments, students will need to be able to write out their thinking.
This strategy can be built on over time with larger numbers...and applied to multiplication and division in the upper grades.

This first student will demonstrate the number sense strategy pictured above.  One of the things I'm working on with my firsties is explaining HOW they solve their problem, and WHY that strategy works.  They are coming along well...click on the picture to watch her solve the problem.

This student utilizes his understanding of tens and ones to mentally add two digit numbers.  With support, he explains his thinking and writes it out on the board.  Click on the picture to check out his thinking! :)

This student utilizes his understanding of tens and ones to add two digit numbers.  Here, he adds two digit numbers by decomposing them into their tens and ones and then recomposing the number to get a sum.

That's all I've got for you today! :)
Teaching math is SO FUN! :)
I hope you're enjoying it with your kiddos too! :)

  2. Thanks Kelly! :) We've talked about number decomposition all year, but for the last two weeks, I've focused on application of those things with them. It's amazing how much they can take in and DO! :) So proud of my firsties! :)

Thanks for coming to say hello! ;)

  3. We started the year with the same concepts, but I felt like some of my kiddos did not grasp it as well as the others. I have some super highs and super lows and I want to meet all of their needs. That is pretty awesome that you are doing these strategies with with your firsties! Thanks for sharing ;)

    1. Thanks, Corinna! :)
It's tough with GO MATH. They don't give the kids enough time to really know these types of skills. I think my intermediate experience has helped me to prepare them a LITTLE bit better, because I know why they need to be able to understand these concepts later on. My lows are really struggling with the value of a digit and composing to 5 and 10. So...although I let them attempt this strategy...they use manipulatives...A TON! I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya as you wrap up the year! :)

    1. They ARE pretty cute! :) Girl I am going to straight up BAWL when they leave. Seriously...even now, when we are walking in the hallway I start to tell them about second grade and I get misty. Inevitably, one of them goes...'Oh, Mrs. Russell!' and shakes their head! LOL! :) I'm just a great big squishy softie! :)

      Thanks for stopping in! :)

  6. Aww...thanks so much, Sarah! :) Now that we're moving towards second grade, it's so exciting to see how the children are really getting a deeper understanding of number sense! :) I'm so glad you stopped by! ;)

  7. Amazing Tamara, I'm so impressed at how the kiddos verbalize their thought process. That's BIG! I have to admit that math is my biggest struggle - I've always been an ELA kinda person. After I saw this - man, I've gotta get on it!!

    1. Nicole,
Thanks so much for stopping by to say hello! :) So glad you liked the videos! :) We've been working on these strategies for about a week. They've been working on place value concepts with subitizing and making tens all year. So, the application of that in these videos was huge for me too. This is my first year back in first after four in third. I was so nervous about teaching this to them, but, so far...we are good! :) Over the next several days...I'll be starting subtraction strategies! :0) Wish me luck! :) I'll need it! :) *sigh*

      XOXO,
      Tamara

  8. Great learning! You can really see that they grasp the concept of decomposing numbers. By the time they get to 5th (my grade) they will really be able to do mental computations pretty quickly...also the why behind the answer. Enjoyed watching.

  9. Thank you so much, Charlotte! :) That's the goal! :) To make all of my learners be ready to take their next step! ;) So glad you came to say hello, even though you're an intermediate teacher! ;)
