Combining the Content with Cute: The S'mores Edition

This is the second installment in a series of posts that I call, Combining the Content with the Cute.  The first was on gingerbread.  If you want to check it out, click HERE. Today, we explore S'MORES!  I love setting goals with my littles!  I find that it helps them to know where they are, and it keeps them motivated.  One of the ways that I am able to do that is in reading!  Our whole team does it!  We have monthly reading goals and at the end of the month, we celebrate the students who have made the goal with a reading goal party!  We try to make them worthwhile for the kids. We really want them to do their best to make it to each one.
We even align one of their end of the year awards to their ability to participate each month and meet the goals they've committed to.  In my class, I have them read 20 books per month.  I am sure that you realize that s'mores are NOT part of our standards, but...here's how we manage to fit them in...and make it content related too! :)  I like to talk to my parents about the reading goals, the parties, and the end of the year awards at the beginning of the year curriculum night.
This helps them know the direction I'm trying to take the kids in for the year.  Every parent wants their kid to excel, and NO parent wants their kid to miss out on fun stuff...so, when their kids bug the heck out of them to fill out that log...they will! :)
I tie this event into content standards by using the experience as a 'How to' Writing!  Shared experiences are a great way to get kids to write organically.  Sometimes, we may be asking students to write about things or experiences that they have never had.  When we write about something we've all experienced together, it's easier to help them recall the important details and deepen their writing!

On Monday, we will use part of a sequential order writing pack that one of my teammates made! :)  Tami has a FB page and a TPT store called Rainforest of Firsties!  The pack includes graphic organizers, graphing and finished product printables for How to make a PB& J, How to make smores, and How to Blow a Bubble! :) She's a great teacher with fantastic ideas!

As you can tell, my teammates and I had a blast putting this together for the kids! :)
There are about 160 kids on the grade level.  That's a whole lotta kids to organize a party for!  So, my teammates help me get my crazy ideas into reality!  Thanks girls! :) XOXO
So...my kids were totally excited about this!
There was so much ooey, gooey, yumminess going on!
They were in a sugar coma by the end...but...SO HAPPY! :) And then we put them right on the bus and sent them home. #truestory #goodluckparents
How did we put this together?
Well, I'm glad you asked! :)
Step One is to gather up all of the materials.
We asked our parents to help us.  They sent in MORE than enough for all of the kids.  We set up in the cafeteria...cause it's the only place we could host a party with that many kids! :)  Plus...the ovens are there!
We used about 8 boxes of graham crackers, 8 six packs of chocolate, and 8 small tubs of fluff.
Next up, line up the trays and put the parchment paper on top.  Lay out the graham crackers.  Spreading the fluff FIRST was a bit easier...Then, put on a few squares of chocolate and the top graham cracker.

This was so much fun to put together!
Once everything is assembled, put the trays in the oven until the marshmallow fluff looks melted.  About 10-12 minutes.
One thing we will do differently next year is that we will give each student a small water bottle!  Oh, my, soul!  They were so thirsty! :)
