Teach Like A Pirate Chapter 12: Stand and Deliver & Advanced Tactics

Well, I'm back on track with my posts on Teach Like A Pirate after a brief hiatus due to my bloggerversary giveaway!  I've also gotten the chance to finish updating some projects and adding a few new items to my store!  It's been a busy and productive summer for me! Let's get started with the chapter for today though...

In this section of the book, Burress discusses a few more hooks that you can use in the classroom.  These hooks all require a high level of teacher engagement! Hope you're ready to get animated!

THE STORYTELLING HOOK

This hook is all about the 'way' we tell stories in the classroom to rope the students into wanting to listen.

THE SWIMMING WITH THE SHARKS HOOK

This one is all about breaking down barriers between you and the students.  Instead of teaching from the front of the room, participate in the learning WITH your students!

THE MIME HOOK

How about using gestures, silence or miming techniques to emphasize a point?  I love to use charades to teach vocbulary with my learners! :)

THE TEASER HOOK

I use this hook in my classes often. showing movie clips at the front end of a lesson gets the kids excited about what you're going to be teaching.  Tell the students ahead of time when you're going to be doing something special...it makes them not want to miss what is coming next!

THE BACKWARDS HOOK

This hook is all about giving students the ending and having them track their way back to the beginning to figure out how the story started.

THE MISSION IMPOSSIBLE HOOK, THE REALITY TV HOOK, THE TECHNO WIZ HOOK

By creating a mystery to solve during a lesson, or involving media that the kids can relate to...even having the entire assignment be completely paperless...students of all learning styles can get excited about the content and desire to be more involved in what you are teaching!

There are so many different ideas in this book!  I look forward to tapping into them during the school year!
